Hydrogen has earned the nickname "white coal" due to its potential as a clean-burning alternative to fossil fuels. Like coal, hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier, but it produces only water vapor when burned, not greenhouse gases or other pollutants. This gives hydrogen advantages over traditional coal and makes it an appealing renewable energy solution.

Research in these second-generation thermochemical processes aims to make them commercially viable for large-scale hydrogen production.
