Path of Exile 2 Trade: All the Details Revealed So Far
Path of Exile 2 Trade is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated ARPGs on the horizon. Developed by Grinding Gear Games (GGG), this follow-up to the highly acclaimed Path of Exile isn’t just a sequel—it’s a massive overhaul of nearly every system in the game. PoE2 promises new visuals, mechanics, skills, classes, and an entirely new campaign while retaining everything players love about the original. With the game’s development now well underway and beta ****ing in sight, here’s everything we know so far about Path of Exile 2.
A Sequel Without Leaving the Original Behind
Unlike traditional sequels, Path of Exile 2 won’t completely replace the original game. Instead, GGG is building the new title as a major expansion that exists alongside the original Path of Exile. Players will be able to choose between the new 7-act campaign or the original 10-act story, both of which converge into the same endgame—the Atlas of Worlds.
This dual-campaign system is one of the more unique approaches in modern ARPG design, and it allows the developers to retain the legacy of PoE while offering a fresh experience for returning and new players alike.
Release Date and Beta Testing
As of now, Path of Exile 2 does not have an official release date, but Grinding Gear Games has confirmed a closed beta is expected to begin in mid-2024. While delays are always possible, the studio has been relatively transparent about development progress, regularly showcasing gameplay updates and revealing new features during their ExileCon events and livestreams.
Fans eager to get their hands on the beta can sign up on the official Path of Exile website, although invites will be limited initially.
A New Campaign: 7 Acts of Darkness and Despair
The new campaign in Path of Exile 2 takes place 20 years after the events of the original game. The once-glorious world of Wraeclast remains a harsh and unforgiving place, filled with corruption, betrayal, and ancient power struggles. The story introduces a fresh cast of characters and enemies, with more grounded, darker storytelling and new cinematic elements to enhance immersion.
Each of the seven acts introduces unique environments, monsters, and bosses. GGG has emphasized that the new campaign will not only be more concise but also better paced, making leveling a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
Visual Overhaul and Animation System
One of the most immediately noticeable changes in Path of Exile 2 is the upgraded visuals. The game runs on an improved version of the original engine, boasting enhanced lighting, more detailed character models, smoother animations, and a more dynamic environment.
The animation system has also been completely reworked. Weapon attacks and spellcasting feel significantly more fluid, and many skills now include more elaborate transitions and impact effects. This revamp brings Path of Exile 2 in line with modern action RPGs, visually competing with titles like Diablo IV and Last Epoch.
New Character Classes and Ascendancies
Path of Exile 2 introduces 19 new Ascendancy classes, one for each combination of the new base classes. These new classes are not simply replacements—they're designed from the ground up to fit the new campaign’s tone and gameplay structure. Each has its own skill tree and playstyle, providing fresh build possibilities for veterans and newcomers.
Players will still have access to the original classes and Ascendancies if they choose to play through the original campaign. However, the new classes are designed to synergize better with the revamped skill system and game pacing of PoE2.
Revamped Skill Gem System
In a bold move, GGG is redesigning the skill gem and support system in Path of Exile 2. Previously, players had to link support gems through item sockets, which often made gear progression frustratingly dependent on socket colors and links. In PoE2, support gems are now socketed directly into active skill gems, making the system more intuitive and user-friendly.
Each skill gem has built-in support gem sockets, allowing players to create powerful combinations without the headache of hunting for the perfect 6-link item. This change simplifies build crafting while maintaining depth and customization.
Weapons and Active Skills Overhaul
Every weapon type in Path of Exile 2 is being reimagined with a distinct identity and unique set of skills. For example, bows are now capable of using charged attacks and have more variety in playstyle, while maces and swords gain access to specific skill trees and combos.
This design philosophy extends to active skills as well. Players will find many returning favorites like Fireball and Lightning Strike, but with new visuals, behaviors, and scaling options. New skills, such as Stormbind, Earthshatter, and Blade Trap, have been showcased in developer demos, revealing a greater focus on tactical decision-making and timing.
Passive Skill Tree Remains, But With Refinements
The iconic Path of Exile passive skill tree is returning in PoE2, but it’s getting a facelift. The tree will remain massive and sprawling, offering thousands of nodes to craft highly specific builds. However, visual clarity, navigation, and certain keystone placements have been improved to reduce confusion and make it easier to map out build paths.
The core design remains unchanged, preserving the deep customization that longtime fans love, while ironing out some of the complexity that has intimidated new players.
New Enemies, Bosses, and AI Improvements
One of the biggest criticisms of the original Path of Exile was the simplicity of enemy AI. In PoE2, monsters and bosses will have more intelligent behaviors, multi-phase fights, and unique mechanics that require quick thinking and positioning.
Boss battles in particular are getting a major upgrade. GGG has shown off encounters with massive screen-filling monsters, environmental hazards, and complex ability sets. These fights feel more like traditional ARPG or even MMO raid encounters, rewarding skillful play and strategic use of abilities.
Monetization Model Remains the Same
Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that Path of Exile 2 will follow the same free-to-play model as the original. The game will be entirely free, with monetization limited to cosmetic microtransactions and stash tabs—no pay-to-win mechanics in sight.
All cosmetics earned or purchased in Path of Exile 1 will carry over into PoE2, a consumer-friendly decision that reflects GGG’s long-standing commitment to its community.
The Future of the Endgame
Though full details of the endgame are still under wraps, GGG has stated that Path of Exile 2 will share the same endgame system as the original game, based around the Atlas of Worlds. However, the system will be expanded and rebalanced to fit the new gameplay flow. Expect new maps, bosses, mechanics, and possibly even entire endgame acts.
Final Thoughts
Path of Exile 2 isn’t just a sequel—it’s an evolution of one of the most complex and rewarding ARPGs ever made. With overhauled systems, stunning visuals, and a brand-new campaign, PoE2 is shaping up to be a game that honors its roots while looking boldly toward the future.
