Diablo 4: How Tyrael Might Factor Into the Game's Story
Diablo 4 continues the legacy of Blizzard's previous popular games and sees hell from a whole new perspective. The follies of humans, angels, and demons are at the heart of the Diablo series, and former archangel Tyrael is in the middle of it all.
Long after Inarius and Lilith secretly created a sanctuary for the Nephalem (the offspring of humans and angels), the Council of Archangels met to decide the fate of humanity. It was Tyrael who cast the deciding vote, so he would be held accountable by the rest of the Angiris Council for that decision, leading to his becoming mortal for the sake of humanity prior to the events of Diablo 4. His role in the upcoming games is currently unknown, but this pivotal figure could affect the series' future in some way.

Diablo 3 delved deeper into the legend of Tyrael, who became a fallen star by tearing off his wings, falling to the sanctuary where the descendants of the nephalem lived. Tyrael teamed up with a scion so powerful that he drove out the Prime Evils and took control of the Black Soulstone. When Maltheal, the Archangel of Death, pursued the Stone and attacked all his allies, it was Tyrael who sent his companions to the Pandemonium to destroy Death itself.
Tyrael chose to remain in his mortal form, but was reunited with his angelic brethren as the embodiment of justice and wisdom. At the end of Diablo 3, he wonders if his new mortal companion, possibly fallen, will one day be the next threat to heaven, hell and sanctuary, and even life itself. The side of justice and wisdom may not stand by as Inarius leads an army to hell to find his old love, Lilith.
The la**** Diablo 4 cinematic trailer from Blizzard features Inarius facing off against Lilith, with the army behind them. While this scene doesn't have Tyrael's direct involvement, his creation of the Horadrim and influence on the sanctuary paladins means he was definitely involved. Light and darkness clashed on the battlefield, and mortal Tyrael stood in between.
His presence is likely to be felt through these intermediaries unless events force his hand. Tyrael still feels the effects of destroying the Worldstone at the end of Diablo II. The mystical artifact that protected the Sanctuary from heaven and hell now takes its place as protector of the land. It doesn't seem likely that Tyrael will rush further into Hell, or go farther than Demon Fortress, where he might, like Deckard Cain, offer advice to those who would stay and listen.
So far, five playable Diablo classes have been announced, and they all represent options for the early game. Given that each issue so far has offered something new, perhaps Tyrael will be part of the battle, balancing the two sides by offering players the ability to take on angelic or demonic powers in exchange for duty to Sanctuary. This type of mechanism could easily follow up the multi-tree improvements already announced for the series.
It seems unlikely that Blizzard will bring Angels and Demons into the class, since the franchise is centered between them. But as a true mortal caught between heaven and hell, Tyrael occupies a unique place in all of Diablo's lore. He's more likely to be the balancer in the story, maybe even the voice of reason, rather than taking sides like he once was. Even forced to take sides, Tyrael now understands the true worth of mortals, and that's how he's most likely to be involved in the events of Diablo 4.
